When we got our son a new hunting crossbow for his birthday, he was so excited.

He wanted to go out there and hunt things, but we told him that he had to respect nature.

He had to consider the food chain and all the animals that really had to hunt for food. We typically just went to the grocery store, but I figured we could get hunting licenses together since we were living in the country now. We had plenty of space on the property to develop targets and so we set up everything. It was our official shooting range and we not only practiced with the crossbows but with our guns as well. Of course we wore the proper ear protection and safety glasses and took special care to only fire towards the targets. A lot of this was during the hot season, so we regularly would go back inside the house for official air conditioning breaks. On some of these overheated days, I don’t know what we would do without our reliable air conditioning system. It’s so important that it works all the way through the warm season too. I don’t want to have the AC system breakdown like it did at my brother’s place one time. He had to pay for emergency repair services and he said that service cost him a small fortune. I don’t want to go through the same thing, so we are always getting our AC system tuned up before the hot season. Anyway, I have a few hunting trips planned with my son coming up and this is both our first time and we both are really excited about it. We’re looking to go deer hunting so that we can make some venison steaks and jerky.

After moving to a new area, I realized immediately that we needed to replace the old HVAC system.

My wife said we should probably just have it repaired, but I didn’t want to deal with costly energy bills. It’s a large house so I feel that it’s essential to look into the most energy efficient heat and AC products on the market. So we had a local contractor come by to discuss what was available in the way of HVAC components. We learned a lot about dual-fuel heating systems, boilers, and even geothermal heat pumps. Honestly, the geothermal HVAC systems are mainly what caught my attention. Some of these systems are designed so well that they can last as long as 50 years with regular maintenance and care. That was hard for me to believe at first, but the man was true to his word talking about these heating and cooling systems. A geothermal HVAC is friendly towards the environment too since there is no combustion involved. It’s all about moving heating energy from an underground source where the temperatures remain stable. Some people even connect their geothermal HVAC systems to large water sources which also have relatively stable temperatures to pull heating energy from. In the summer, these systems are able to be put in reverse operation to send the heating away from the house producing the cooling effect that we desire in the hot season. I decided to make this investment. Though it was costly, so far it has been worth it as we are saving bigtime on the energy bills.

When my wife and I decided to move out to a nice country home, my wife discovered that the sun rises were so wonderful. Of course, the sunsets were also just as dreamy which I liked the most, but she insisted that I check out the sunrise with her a few times. I had to admit, the sunrise was nice to see, but I felt very cold even with my jacket on and I just wanted to get back inside where the heating system was working. The house came with a nice boiler system and those radiators provide plenty of heating to all the right places in the house. Also, the boiler system is highly energy efficient, so I really appreciate having such a nice boiler. That was one of the first things we did after moving in, made sure the boiler was in good shape by going through a local contractor. I had to admit that the sun rises were nice and all, but I never liked waking up so early just to catch the sunrise. The sunsets on the other hand, I can watch all the time and I appreciate it when my wife wants to do that. These days, we love relaxing outside around the outdoor fireplace and we will typically catch the sunset. My wife likes to take pictures when the skies look especially beautiful with all the lovely colors. It’s also fun to roast marshmallows over the fireplace in the evening hours, the kids especially love making s’mores. I’ll tell you, moving out to this area was the best decision we ever made.

My little brother has always been pretty stubborn and never wants to listen to any good advice.

Well, recently he got into a bit of trouble because he wanted to terminate his lease early. I was the one who told him from the beginning that he should be careful about signing a lease contract and he should make sure he understands everything within the contract, especially when it comes to early lease termination. He said he wouldn’t have any issues, but then he ended up losing his job. He had issues with the HVAC in the house too and he complained to the landlord about all that. The landlord started to become angry though because he was paying his rent late and he said he wasn’t going to fix the HVAC until my brother was caught up on rent. Well, having lost his job, it was tough for him to do this. I ended up helping him get a lawyer, but there wasn’t much that could be done because my brother technically was violating his lease and he just wanted to move out and quit paying rent altogether. When he did this though, he had to go back to court and he had to pay some hefty fees to the landlord. The landlord of course repaired all the HVAC equipment after my brother moved out of the house. It’s a shame he didn’t listen to my advice early on, but I know he at least learned a valuable lesson here. In the meantime, I’m letting him stay with me for a short while until he can get back on his feet. He’s currently studying to become an HVAC technician which I think is a wise career choice.

There was a time when I used to enjoy way too many sweets. I even looked forward to my birthdays just because I knew that everybody could enjoy some delicious cake together and oftentimes I would only eat junk on those days like pizza, candy, and soda pop. Eventually, I learned that I had to focus more on my diet and try to eliminate all the sweets. Even on my birthdays, I quit enjoying cake. I noticed a lot of improvement since eliminating the sweets. Everything feels better, even my internal temperature control mechanisms. There was a time when I always felt overheated all the time and I would crank the AC system so much. That made for more expensive energy bills, but at least I felt relaxed with all the air conditioning. Since cutting the sweets though, I have lost a lot of weight and I don’t feel overheated and sweaty anymore these days. I rarely am cranking the air conditioning system. As a matter of fact, I usually keep the temperature control at 74 degrees, compared to back in the day when I would crank it to 68 degrees. I can’t tell you how much of a difference it is on the energy bills. I actually use the ceiling fans more often these days instead of adjusting the temperature control, that was a good energy saving tip I learned and it has helped to save a good amount of money. This year for my birthday, instead of being surprised with a rich chocolate cake, I was blessed with a new smart thermostat. I knew this was one of the smartest ways to save money, because the smart thermostat will save as much as 15% on your energy bills, which is nothing to scoff at.
