Easy tips for reducing the cost of HVAC cooling this summer

It’s coming.

There are heat pumps already perking up in my neighborhood.

It won’t be long before mine joins in the chorus of HVAC cooling that will be here sooner than we think. I’m really one of the last ones to flip the thermostat over to HVAC cooling. This gives me and my family the opportunity to sort of get accustomed to the heat. We’re a big outdoor type family so getting acclimated to the heat is important for us. For sure, it gets broiling hot around here in the summer months. But that doesn’t mean it’s time to hide inside the air conditioning for four months either. That would be dumb given how lovely it is around here. There are so many fun, exciting activities to enjoy outside. However, it sure is nice to come home to plenty of HVAC cooling when we get home. To keep our HVAC cooling costs in check, we start with HVAC maintenance to ensure the heat pump is running at maximum efficiency. From there, it’s all about making sure the house is sealed tight and that we’re maintaining thermostat discipline as well. For that, we try to follow a simple rule. We try to keep the thermostat setting around 15 degrees cooler than the outside temperatures. This is especially key during the heat of the day. We program our thermostat to be in the 80’s during the peak heating hours of the day. This allows us to enjoy air conditioning comfort and humidity balance inside without overloading the HVAC equipment. It’s not too tough to manage the air conditioning in this region as long as you make the effort.
