How to solve the mystery of my leaky air ducts

I’m losing a lot of air in the ductwork and I need to figure out where it came from.

  • Maybe some of the duct tape came off from one of the joints, allowing a lot of air to escape.

Air isn’t leaking from our Heating and A/C system’s air handler area, so I assume the problem is in the basement where the ductwork runs. We have the vents in the floors of this beach house because we do not have an attic or crawlspace and the ceilings are too low for ducts. Perhaps rats chewed up the tape on the ducts despite the fact that I need to go down there and service it. All I need is some duct tape, and then I’ll be ready to go. The air conditioning was not cooling down the beach house as much anymore, so I first cleaned the HEPA filter, but it still didn’t work. My next step was to check the air flow from the vents, which was restricted. One of the ducts must be leaking. If I am unable to fix the problem, then I will contact my friend who works at the local Heating and Air Conditioning business to see if he could help me. Since it is Sunday, I don’t think they are open today, so I will give them a call in the morning tomorrow if I cannot fix it myself.
