My brother and I got our smart thermostat at the same time.
I needed to have a new HVAC system installed, and he had recently bought a new air conditioning unit.
It surprised me they hadn’t changed his thermostat when he got the AC unit, but it wasn’t acting up. Within a month of buying the AC unit, the thermostat broke. He thought there was something wrong with the AC unit because it quit working. When he found it was the fault of the thermostat, he was relieved. He bought a smart thermostat, not realizing it was exactly like mine. He and his wife Sally came over for dinner one Sunday and I saw him looking at my thermostat. I knew he and my husband had discussed it, but I ignore them most of the time. Sally and I were talking about the kids while I was getting dinner. I was just about to put dinner on the table when I realized my air conditioning wasn’t working. I went to the thermostat, and somehow the temperature had been reset to eighty degrees. I reset the thermostat to seventy-two and we all sat down to eat. We were halfway through dessert when I felt a chill in the air. I checked the thermostat and had been reset to sixty-five. I was ready to say something to my husband when he and my brother burst out laughing. They realized our thermostats were identical and my brother was using his phone app to change the temperature. I refused to talk to either of them for the rest of the evening.
