There are days that I wake up and forget that I’m not living in the city with radiant heating that I can’t really control.
Instead, I’m inside my own home and on 8 acres of my very own land.
This was a common dream for both my wife and I and something we had pursued since we were married. Then finally being able to leave the apartments with all the noise and the weak air conditioning was awesome. We decided to move South. This is where we wanted to go and we lived well out of any city in order to afford to buy a piece of land. So we traded the radiant heating for the heat pump and all this air conditioning. Honestly, that first winter I thought we might have turned on the heating 5 times. It was just such a mild and beautiful winter. We came down here at the beginning of fall and settled in right away. Since we don’t have any neighbors, it didn’t make any sense to put up any sort of window coverings. It was nice to look out at the birds and enjoy the sunshine. But that all changed in late spring when we got introduced to direct sunlight heating. Direct sunlight heating will cost you a bundle in HVAC cooling if you don’t know otherwise. And that’s what happened to us for the first month of having the air conditioning running. So now we have solar shades and our HVAC cooling costs are not equivalent to a car payment.
