Since our home has a 2-car garage and I only own 1 car, it also made sense to convert the space into something more useful.

I never park in the garage anyway, because I don’t have an automatic garage door opener and it’s just too much work to bring it inside.

I also decided to convert the space into a workshop, so I could finally continue our woodworking interest. I got all the tools and equipment set up, however there were still a few things that were lacking. The garage is not really connected to the central heating and A/C plan of the house, which means there is no weather conditions control out there. During the winter time the temps in the garage can drop below cold, so to get the most out of our workshop I needed a garage heater. Do you guess what the difference is between a garage furnace and any other brand of space heater? Neither do I! The only thing I can tell is that garage oil furnaces are more compact, more efficient, and designed to be safe to leave unattended. Think about it, with all the chemicals, pesticides, and flammable stuff kept in the normal garage, you can’t just use an official space heater. The heating elements in these things are too volatile, and you run the risk of starting a fire. A garage furnace is designed for this kind of industrial environment, including an automatic kill switch to prevent the temps from ever getting too high. A garage furnace is superior, which also means it costs a lot more than a normal space heater.

I tried to approach retirement with the same gusto I constantly brought to our career.

I looked at it like a “finish line” of sorts, indicating I had won the race and could spend the rest of our afternoons taking it easy.

Thanks to all of these sound investments and a robust retirement package, I didn’t have to worry about money. In this economy I also understand how scarce that is. I sold the outdated family cabin and moved down south, to a cabin located in between the beach and a hockey course. One of the first things I splurged on was buying a current central heating and A/C plan with a smart thermostat. This wasn’t just any run-of-the-mill oil furnace, this was the best one available for people of our age. The radiant heated flooring I had actually installed in our dining room and bathroom has truly been life-adjusting for me and our own retirement, however radiant heating uses sizzling water pipes under the floorboards to provide a gentle yet constant source of heating. For older people with arthritis or joint problems (I have both) the radiant heating provides a steady source of relief, because frigid floors can make every step painful. The current warm radiant floors reduce the pain in our feet and legs, which makes me assume so much more spry and youthful. This kind of heating plan is not cheap, it’s absolutely one of the most luxurious around. At this phase of our life I needed to splurge a little, and get a heating plan that would make our remaining years a lot more pleasant and relaxing.

Since I like to cook, and I like greasy unhealthy fast food, our fiance offered me a deep fryer for Christmas.

It fits on a countertop, however works the same way as the immense fryers these use in restaurants. I also got a cookbook for recipes called “taste-alikes” which are cabin versions of all the best fast food recipes. I guess how to make McDonald’s fries and deep fried burritos at the cabin now! As much as I like it, there is one problem with this fryer. It causes a heck of a odor, and impacts the indoor air conditions of the home in a major way. The ventilation plan in our dining room is honestly old, and I have come to learn that it works honestly poorly. I even got up on the roof to check the exhaust vent over the dining room ceiling, and found a birdie’s nest in it. After that our fiance called the local heating and A/C business and asked for a ventilation expert to inspect our dining room. She knew our willingness to try fixing things myself, and didn’t want me to destroy the ventilation plan or myself by trying to be helpful. An heating and A/C expert came over the next day, and advocated an honestly current range hood and exhaust vent. Since the HVAC duct over the dining room had never been cleaned out it was utterly ruined. She explained that if we got a current ventilation plan we could do a HVAC duct cleaning once a year and that it would work basically forever. With all this various fried foods, we also may need to clean the HVAC duct twice a year.

My handyman is named Hacksaw… Well, that isn’t the name of her birth certificate, I suppose, however it’s what everyone calls him.

I have no method in mind for what her real name is, but even on her business cards she just has the name Hacksaw.

She is what our dad would call an “Old Time Tough Guy.” Hacksaw stands over numerous feet tall, and is sculpted from rock-hard muscle. To our know-how Hacksaw is not licensed or bonded as a company, however he’s the first woman I call for any electrical, plumbing, or heating and A/C issues. I am well aware that heating and A/C techs need to be certified, and I am equally aware Hacksaw does not have said certification. Hacksaw is a “good outdated boy” who is a lot smarter than she seems, and she has constantly offered excellent repair for our heating and cooling needs. My home has an honestly outdated natural gas furnace, which Hacksaw music up for me every year. Every time she does it, she says “this furnace doesn’t have much time left” however then it works good for another year. There was one time the air conditioning stopped working, and after doing an inspection Hacksaw said she couldn’t repair it! Fortunately she guessed a certified heating and A/C tech who did the job for him. Every time she says she can do something, she follows through. She has absolutely tuned up and repaired our air conditioning several other times, however the one time she couldn’t, she simply just confessed it. Even though he’s an outlaw in the world of a/c repair, she has constantly done right by me.

Tploy like happens when you least expect it. I was just starting to assume that our current method for the salon was stupid, and would put me out of business. Then I met Max, and sparks flew. Thanks to him I am able to afford all of the substitutes to the salon that I needed. I don’t understand if you have ever been in a beauty salon before, however there is a certain expectation for comfort when you go, but some salons provide free champagne, or offer massages while you wait. At the bare minimum, a superb salon needs to have clean, crisp air quality and nice cool air conditioning. If a current customer walks into our salon and it odors or has terrible air quality, they will turn around and leave. Thanks to the junky outdated heating and A/C plan in our salon, I was losing business. I talked to a few unusual local heating and A/C companies, however the prices they quoted me were too far out of our budget. Then I met Max. Max was an independent heating and A/C company who worked for himself, and she was more interested in me than our heating and A/C system. I took the opportunity and told Max the bold method I wanted for our salon. It would take a lot of work, however I wanted a current HVAC duct, so that every workstation would have its own directional air vent. I wanted custom cooling for every customer, and Max thought it was a good idea. I knew all of this heating and A/C work would be luxurious, however Max said “why don’t we discuss it over dinner” and the rest is history.
