When my heat turned on for the first last year, I heard of mayflies nesting in ductwork before.

I called the HVAC company who asked me if I was sure the mayflies had come out of the ductwork? They were all over my house and hovering on the wall over the air vent in my kitchen.

I couldn’t cook because I was afraid they would get into my food. She told me she had never heard of mayflies in ductwork, and I told her welcome to my club. I wanted the ductwork cleaned and sanitized, and I wanted to know how the mayflies got inside. She said she didn’t know how they go inside, unless there was a crack in the ductwork, and the HVAC technician would need to find that. I felt like I was talking to an idiot. She didn’t have an original thought in her head. I told her to send the HVAC technician to the house. I would call an exterminator to make sure there were no other creepy crawlies hanging out in the ductwork, and then their HVAC company could repair, clean, and sanitize my ductwork. She was smiling while talking and told me that was smart thinking. She wished she had thought to tell me that. The exterminator was at the house the next morning, and the HVAC technician arrived the same afternoon. He called to have the ductwork cleaners come to the house. He had found several small cracks in the ductwork, but nothing the ductwork cleaners couldn’t repair. Within three days, the mayflies were gone, and my ductwork had been cleaned, repaired, and sanitized.

• There was less heat coming through the air vents, and I knew my furnace was running for longer periods of time.

I told the HVAC company receptionist that I wanted someone to inspect my furnace and do a good inspection of the ductwork. I was hoping I needed repairs to the furnace, but I was sure I was going to need to replace the ductwork. When the HVAC technician was done with his inspection, he told me I had holes in that ductwork that were so big, a small rat could get through. I cringed, thinking I had rats in the house. I asked if my ductwork was really that ratty. He said there were no rats yet, but that was how big some holes were. Most of my heat was escaping into the basement, and anywhere else where the holes were. He told me I had to replace the entire ductwork system, which was going to be quite expensive. I didn’t even want to think about the cost. He explained how they now made a flex pipe ductwork. It was flexible and took up less room that the metal ductwork. The cost was almost half of what it would be to make the metal ductwork and it didn’t rust through. I liked the thought of flex pipe ductwork, and asked when he could have it installed. He measured up the amount of flex pipe I would need and gave me a quote for the ductwork and the installation. Although it was still wildly expensive, it was a lot cheaper than traditional metal ductwork.

My brother just got back from vacation, our dad is here and it’s 8:30 in the morning. My dad says, “so what do we have on task for today.” My brother was caught off guard that our dad was in our HVAC business building asking us what is on task for the day. I told our dad that we have install a boiler at Mr. Jenkins’s house and are expected to be there at 10 am. Other than that we don’t have anything else scheduled for the day because I don’t know if we will be able to complete it in one shot. I’m hoping though with my brother here that the HVAC bros can get it done together quite swiftly. Also, since now we have our dad here it should help as well. My dad smiled at that response and I can see our relationship getting to a nice place since he has been here for a couple of days now. Mark and my relationship haven’t been the greatest when we were children but we do have his work ethic. My brother just got back this morning from vacation and really didn’t know what was going on. All my brother said was “ok.” I think he was just trying to still understand why our dad was here and why he was here for a few days. I told him dad is going to see our aunt and he stopped through for a few days. Dad said, “yeah about that I really wanted to just spend time with you guys while I’m here.” He then proceeded to tell us he had no intention to see our aunt.

6 am is too early for my alarm to go off. I’m already in the office and today I get to see my brother Mark back at our HVAC company. I’m very excited to see him and I hope he got me a souvenir! I really don’t care if he got me one though but just having my brother back out in the field working on people’s heating and cooling needs with me is something I have been missing the last 2 weeks. I hear him walk in and I hear him yell, “Hello!” I welcomed him back with a big high five and said you have been missed. Also, we have some work to do already. Mark then said, “I started yesterday on Mrs. Swanson’s furnace and Charlie’s smart thermostat.” Mark continues to tell me he just got back yesterday and he already was put to work so he didn’t have time to settle back in for today. I was a little upset for him because he wasn’t supposed to technically start back today and they should’ve reached out to me but they didn’t. I told Mark just to take his time this morning because we really don’t have much to do until 10 am. A few minutes later our father walks in. Mark seemed a bit confused and asked if he just got in. I told Mark that our dad has been here for a few days now and he has helped me out a bit with our HVAC business. Dad smiled and said, “Hey Mark, I have been waiting to see you.”

They sleep in my bed all night and really keep me warm, as they both lie next to me under the covers all night long.

It is amazing how much energy comes from the sun, which is over 93 million miles away. I can’t even comprehend how far away that is, as a million miles alone seems like an eternity from here. Imagine how big the sun really is, like if you could get close to it, you would probably cry at the enormity of the thing. I’m not sure how many earths could fit inside the sun but I am sure it is some crazy amount, maybe like 1000 of them, I dunno. I can’t use Google to search now because the local business next door knocked out the power to our building doing some kind of HVAC system work. We probably won’t have power for another week knowing how slow the power companies are in this country. At least I have a natural heating device with my cats at night, keeping me warm just like a space heater would do. They sleep in my bed all night and really keep me warm, as they both lie next to me under the covers all night long. I don’t have to use my electric heater at night because the cats do such a good job of heating up my room. I think we are almost finished with winter anyways so I really won’t need any heat to keep me warm much longer. Summer will be here though and the air conditioning will be running full blast again, which is great because I have a new HEPA filter in the thing and it should help with the air quality in my flat.
