I just came back from the beach at noon and it was packed with private schoolers on a Thursday.

I asked 1 of them if it was a school holiday today and they said no, they just skipped school today because the weather was so nice. I could see wanting to be in the hot daylight as opposed to a frosty classroom with no central heating. For some reason the schools don’t have any weather conditions control in them, I believe it is because of a lack of funds. I couldn’t imagine going to class in June with no a/c and having to rest all day in the sweltering heat. Maybe they get used to it however I believe I would be skipping class quite often if that was the case. I remember in elementary school in the south, every one of us had no a/c and I would be perspiring as I watched the kid beside myself and others kill gnats and count them on a napkin. It was a slap in the face with heat compared to the cool classrooms I was used to when I lived up north. Luckily, when I made it to middle school every one of us had the luxury of a central Heating and A/C plan to keep us comfortable year round. I’m so spoiled now in our flat I couldn’t imagine residing without it anymore, not even for a single day. Come to believe of it, I need to wash the HEPA filter today because I observed it is getting a easily white film of dust on it as it’s been a few months since I’ve cleaned it.

All my life, I have lived in a major city. It has been great, but I think it’s time for me to leave to experience something different. Therefore, I decided to take a job in a small town that was unfamiliar to me just to see how much I would like to live in a town like that. I don’t want to sign a long-term lease because if I get there, and I don’t like it, I would love to just return home with no issues. So, I decided that I would find a furnished house for rent and sign a month-to-month lease. This way I am not locked in for a year, and if at some point, I don’t like my new job or the town, I can leave and not look back. I was surprised at how cheap this furnished house was. In my city, a 2-bedroom house like this would be double the rent. Perhaps it’s because the furnished house is in a small town, and they don’t get that many renters. I am just happy that I found a house that was affordable and even happier that it was already furnished. I didn’t want to have to worry about buying furniture once I moved to this new town. I saw the pictures of the home, and the furniture is very casual and looks comfortable. This house has a washer and dryer and a backyard which I will be spending lots of time in. I am looking forward to starting something new, and eventually I will decide my next move. If I like the house, perhaps I will sign a longer lease.

I resisted the peer pressure to try cigarettes in high school and college.

I was tricked once when a friend of mine assured me that he had these special clove cigarettes that lacked tobacco and nicotine altogether.

Stupidly, I trusted him on his word and tried those clove cigarettes and loved them! I bought a pack and blew through half of them before I read the ingredient list and realized my grave error. Thankfully I was smart enough to throw out the rest of the pack before I got hooked on tobacco. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t thrown away those cigarettes and kept smoking them until I was craving more from the store. My close friend John was hooked on cigarettes the same year I tried cloves for the first time, but the two incidents were completely unrelated. He was at a party and was trying to impress girls there when he took a cigarette from a friend and took a few puffs. After doing this every weekend for a few months straight, he was already buying packs of cigarettes from the gas station to smoke when we were on lunch breaks at work. I would shake my head when I thought about how easy it was for him to get hooked. Now he uses an air purifier just to collect all of the second hand smoke to prevent it all from merely filling his apartment and turning it into a cloudy haze of smoke when he puffs indoors. The air purifier is an essential device in his home’s setup.

When I wanted an Ipod in high school so I could listen to my music at school, they were beyond my capacity to afford the purchase.

Most of my extended family members were poor so I didn’t really get money for birthdays or holidays that I could save for larger purchases.

Luckily, I learned about factory refurbished Ipods that were 35% less than the brand new ones. My parents were skeptical that I’d be getting a broken device that only worked for a few months at best, but it arrived and looked like it was brand new. That factory refurbished Ipod lasted for six years of daily use until I left it on a cruiseliner inadvertently. For all I know, it would have survived for much longer had I not lost it in the end. So when I needed a new window air conditioner for my apartment and realized it would cost a lot more money than I initially realized, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to look for a factory refurbished machine before settling on something needlessly more expensive. I was delightfully surprised to quickly find a marketplace for factory refurbished appliances and scored a deal on a name brand window air conditioner for $50 less than the normal retail device. This amounted to a 25% savings overall, and the refurbished machine works perfectly fine. The company who made the machine did a great job making sure it was working like a brand new model. There were no odors in the window a/c and little to no sign of use.

There is a certain online marketplace that I use for a large portion of my essential purchases.

I like their two-day delivery offers, low prices, and easy return process.

The last point is key, because a company that covers a volume of business that large is bound to make mistakes. You have to let your customers make returns if they end up with a bad product. Otherwise you’re going to have angry customers on your hands that leave scathing reviews about “money and time wasted,” which seem to be the recurring words that drone on from the chorus of complaints. I have had mostly good experiences until the pandemic started, then the huge increase in volume and a lack of quality employees made their customer service drop in a noticeable way. Recently I ordered what I believed to be high quality HVAC filters with a massively high MERV rating of 14 and a layer of charcoal crystals on one side. The comparable filter from 3M at the hardware store is only MERV 12 and costs more per unit. Unfortunately, these filters had a strange chemical odor so I put them next to my smart air purifier which can track VOC levels. I was speechless when I saw the results. It tracked a noticeably increase in VOC levels while the comparable 3M filter had a VOC level of 0. I feel bad for people who use this air filter in their HVAC system and then have to deal with the horrible VOCs that are attached to the filter itself and then dealing with the VOCs getting into the HVAC system at large.
