I was a very lucky little girl.

When I was about four, my dad built a playhouse in our backyard.

He had installed electricity, running water, and an HVAC system. It was a new ductless HVAC system, but it kept the playhouse comfy and cool. My mom told him he was spoiling me, but I was their only child. He was an HVAC tech and he thought he should use his perks and have HVAC for his baby girl. Up until I was almost a teenager, my friends and I would hang out in that playhouse. It had plenty of headspace, unless you were six feet tall. There was a small bathroom that was on the cramped side, but it was usable. The HVAC system was still running well, so we would bring our sleeping bags, and sleep on the floor. One evening, my husband and I were visiting mom and dad, and I walked out to the playhouse. The air conditioning wasn’t working. I went inside and told dad the HVAC system was broken. He came out and tried to make it work, but the HVAC system wasn’t cooperating. It was broken, and it didn’t want to be resurrected. I felt bad leaving the playhouse. It was like I was leaving an old friend behind. I asked dad if he could put a new HVAC system in the playhouse. He couldn’t believe I might want to play in it again. I smiled and looked over at my husband. I told mom and dad their granddaughter may want to play in it.

I knew she was going to say that, and I was already packing my clothes

I needed a small apartment for three months, while my house was being remodeled. I didn’t want to get a place where I had to sign a lease. I knew I wouldn’t be in the apartment for more than three or four months. I found a lovely little cottage that was close to where I lived, and it was said to be modern, and fully furnished. I couldn’t wait to get my clothing together, and put my belongings in storage. I was thrilled knowing I had found the perfect place, and was paying less rent than I had expected to pay. I walked into the cottage, but I couldn’t find the thermostat. I needed to turn the temperature down and cool it off. I called the rental office, but they insisted they told me there wasn’t air conditioning. All I read was that it was a modern cottage, and fully furnished. If it was modern, it was safe to assume there was air conditioning in the cottage. She started to laugh and asked me if I knew what ‘assume’ meant, but I wasn’t amused. I wanted air conditioning, and since it wasn’t in the house now, I wanted it there by evening, or I was moving out more quickly than I moved in. She was huffing, but I was serious. I was not going to stay in the cottage without air conditioning. She told me there was no possible way she could have air conditioning in the house in less than a couple of hours. I knew she was going to say that, and I was already packing my clothes. I was worrying about what else was forgotten to be modernized, if they didn’t have air conditioning.

For months, we searched for the perfect beach house for rent, so we could take our kids to the beach.

There were plenty of indoor things to do, so my kids didn’t need to be out in the sun all day.

There were activities to do when the sun went down, and we brought plenty of games and things to keep them occupied. We found the perfect beach house that had been newly renovated and put our two week deposit down. The first day we arrived, we were getting settled in, and only left the perfectly air conditioned beach house to go out to dinner. The next morning, we were heading out to the beach for a couple of hours, and then it was time to get out of the hot sun. When we got back to the beach house, the air conditioning was off. I asked my husband if he had turned it off when we left, but he said no. I knew I hadn’t touched the thermostat. I called the rental office and told them the air conditioning unit wasn’t working. She told me she would have someone at the beach house within an hour. It was almost five hours later that I called again. The beach house was unbearable, and we got in the car to do some sightseeing, just to keep cool. She said someone had arrived, but we weren’t there. She had a key and should have assumed we wouldn’t stay there in a hot beach house. The HVAC technician arrived twenty minutes later. He said he had just been notified the AC wasn’t working, or he would have been there hours ago.

Where we live, there is so much humidity you are always covered in sweat when outside.

The only reprieve we have, is knowing there is excellent air conditioning in the house.

Most of us are used to the heat and humidity, but it is always good to get inside. My parents spend most of their time outside, even when it is extremely hot. They said they get sick from the air conditioning. I think they have spent so much time in this area, it feels natural to be without air conditioning. I grew up with it and I don’t want to live without air conditioning. Last week, I heard my mom and dad talk about how good it is for them now. Mom asked if dad remembered that one summer night when they almost drowned in their own sweat. Dad laughed and said that was before they had air conditioning. Mom agreed, but her memories were not for my ears, so I walked away. I knew mom and dad had been in love since their teens, but I never thought of them as being young. I always saw mom and dad for who they are now. Them laughing about rowing around the lake when it was 100 degrees just to not have grandpa listening to them had me laughing. Maybe I was spoiled by air conditioning, but it’s better than drowning in sweat. I couldn’t imagine it being that hot, not having air conditioning, and still laughing about it. Two weeks later, I had the chance to find out what it felt like. Our air conditioning quit running in the middle of the night.

If you are looking to have some real good energy savings I have a nice suggestion for you.

That would be to try to give your central heating plus a/c system a rest, but how can you do this if it is real hot out or real frigid out? Believe it or not there is an answer plus it is more simple than you could have ever dreamed of.

This would be to go out plus get yourself some portable heating plus a/c equipment. By doing this I am talking about getting a portable a/c system plus a portable space heater. Now you may need to get more than one of each which could sound a bit expensive. Especially for the portable a/c systems which run close to five hundred bucks in some cases! However if you take into consideration the amount of currency these will save you on your daily energy bill within the course of one single plus simple year, you will find that the initial investment will not be too bad or any real investment. Because you will make that currency back plus more within the energy savings you will be having from getting the portable heating plus a/c device for your home! I would highly advise doing this if you can afford to do so. It will help you out pretty well plus you will be absolutely cheerful you did.
