I was thinking about making a drastic shift in my life.

I had never lived away from town or the city since I can remember. My sister was sure I wouldn’t survive the countryside for a month, considering that I had always been near everything I needed. The grocery store, the hardware, the gym, and even schools for my kids were a walking distance from my house in the city. The only time I needed to drive was when I go to work and even this is 20 minutes away. Since I had planned to retire early, I felt it was time. I had saved enough to live off my retirement fund, not to mention that the family business I ran with my wife was thriving. My spouse and the children were also excited about the new challenge and journey. We packed our bags and moved one weekend since we did not want to overthink this decision. We planned to live in a rented home for three months as we built our house from scratch. Everything was set and we started this journey. Building the house was the easiest part but some of the details needed the intervention of professionals. We needed an effective HVAC system installed in the house so we went scouting for the right professionals. We wanted someone or a HVAC company that is confident enough to install a new HVAC system from scratch. What no one told us was that this would be a long journey. Besides the fact the nearest HVAC business was several miles away, they were only equipped to handle minor HVAC repairs and regular heating and cooling maintenance. After driving around for weeks, a neighbor directed us to a nearby small town to meet an experienced HVAC professional who could handle new HVAC system installations. We had to cater for the extra costs of transport and accommodation as the team worked on the project.

The time to move on had come and the entire family was excited.

The kids were excited about having space that could accommodate all the animals they kept to keep. My daughter Shirley wanted a real pony and a dog, while her brother Jake wanted to have several cows to care for. We wouldn’t have been proud as parents seeing our kids rejoice and look forward to caring for animals. My spouse and I had decided to sell our city house and bought a farm in the countryside. Since we were marketing consultants, we could work remotely and that is why we decided to live our dream. We had always wanted to live on a farm and be self-sufficient. We moved and were still workin from the truck as we worked on the farmhouse. There were a few things that we were yet to complete before we could move into the house. The plumber was coming this week and he had given us three days to be done. The other team that was coming in two days was the HVAC business. The heating contractor had assured us that he and his team would have everything ready for installation. We had spent the week before finding the perfect HVAC equipment for this space. We had settled on radiant heating since we wanted the floors to be warm. As for the cooling unit, we wanted something stable and long lasting to get us through hot summers. The HVAC professionals had come to the farmhouse with us a few weeks earlier and taken measurements. This means that everything that is going to be fitted here will be perfect for the house.

I planned to go on a solo road trip and was actually looking forward to it.

It had been a while since I traveled. I had been reading for my medical exams for months and hardly had time to eat, let alone enjoy my favorite hobby. Once I was done with the last paper, I knew the only reward was for me to go on a long road trip. I went to book a bus ticket and was ready for my 13 hour long bus ride. I picked a destination I had never been to before and was eager to find out what it held in store for me. One hour after the bus left the station, everything was perfect as I listened to music through my earphones. However, things began heating up and I wondered what was going on. Before getting on this bus I had checked that they had air conditioning. This was crucial for me since I was traveling in summer and the heat can be unbearable. Little did I know that I was in for a shock. While the bus had an AC installed, it was not functional. I had to remove my jacket, and even get my portable hand fan just to make myself feel cool and comfortable. I went over the three bottles of water I had packed in two hours. It turns out that I was not the only one struggling with the heat. Other passengers started complaining about the excess heat which is why our driver stopped at the next stage. He had the AC checked and it was not possible to fix it. We were asked to move into another bus with a working air conditioner. The bus company apologized for the discomfort caused and offered all passengers free snacks and water supplies.

I loved my grandma and would spend days with her.

My parents would drop us off at her place whenever they had to rush for a business meeting out of town. I enjoyed listening to grandma’s stories as well as cooking/ baking with her. She had the most hilarious stories of when they were younger. She loved the farm and missed it a lot but was stuck in the city because she needed to be close to my parents who took care of her due to medical challenges. SInce she had refused to move in with us, my parents got her a small apartment a few blocks from our house. I remember one summer afternoon my mom dropped me at grandmas and left in a rush. She had a meeting in the next 30 minutes and was afraid of running late since this was an investors meeting. I rushed into grandma’s house only to be hit by a strong warm breeze. This was unlike my grandma’s place that was eVer comfortable and inviting. I ran to the kitchen where she was shouting that her HVAC unit was broken. Grandma laughed and said that her AC was working perfectly. Turns out that she had not switched on the cooling unit because she felt no need to. The breeze that came in through the windows should be enough as she said. Her explanation was that she had lived for years when there was no air conditioning system so she knew no one would die from a little heat discomfort. While this did not make much sense, I was not about to start arguing with grandma as I wouldn’t win this fight.

I entirely never even got into the computer and internet age which everyone live on and by today.

I have to say that I appreciate older heating and A/C technology over modern heating and A/C technology. I just can not get into things like smart temperature controls, radiant radiant heated floors and all those kind of things. To me they just seem way too complicated for my old school brain. I entirely never even got into the computer and internet age which everyone live on and by today. I know just the basics for even that, which is great with me! So what makes you feel I would want to complicate my life with all this super advanced heating and A/C technology? Give me a window cooling system unit any afternoon. Also I would take a gas boiler over any central heating and cooling system! Even a hot water boiler would be better than central heating and cooling system’s boilers in my humble opinion, then now do not get me wrong, I am not trashing all this so called “great” heating and A/C technology of today. I know it works for some people and I am way ok with that and will not judge anyone; Younger and pure young folks can have and handle this modern heating and A/C technology that its nothing and second nature; Kind of like how the way the ebb and flow of old heating and A/C technology was for me back in the good old afternoons. I do miss it and try to stay as basics to that plan as I can within today heating and A/C technology.
