Eventually, Jiana had to take matters into her own hands and buy her sister a dehumidifier. This was the only way to get her to stop complaining that it was too humid in her home. The two sisters live on opposite sides of the country. Jiana is in the north, still close to their parents and the house they grew up in. She has never been much of an explorer, and she found it easier living close to home. However, her sister, who is three years younger, is the typical second child. Ever since she was young, there was nothing much that fazed her. Jiana had a hard time moving out of her comfort zone, but her sister was always there pushing her. Their dynamics have always differed, but they are super close. When Jiana’s sister relocated to the coast, she immediately purchased a beach house. The house had excellent cooling, but during summer, even this isn’t enough. She was finding it hard to cope with the extreme humidity that grips the area during summer. So, all Jiana heard was it was too humid in her sister’s home. She went to a local HVAC store in her area, purchased a dehumidifier and sent it to her sister. Jiana got an excellent deal since people don’t use dehumidifiers that much in her local area. Her sister was super thankful for the dehumidifier and admitted she was just dragging her feet about making the purchase.

It took me a while to get my footing in the construction industry.

Competition has been cutthroat, and so many seasoned local contractors bid and win thanks to their vast network, massive machinery, and expertise in the sector.

As an independent contractor coming up, it was a challenging entry point for me. But the break finally came with one client who believed in me. The builder needed a custom insulating custom form for a new build, but no contractor took it up because they thought the calculations were not practical for the square footage of the house. And as they say, the rest is history. Now I manage a thriving HVAC company that installs any HVAC unit for custom builds in and around the state. Impressed with our work, some existing homes that need ac repair or renovations often call us for an overhaul or just faulty parts that need fixing, like an ac filter or air duct cleaning. However, we do not provide full package home services or HVAC maintenance because of the demanding contracts that we handle all year round. Ductwork can be quite demanding. We inspect rooms, calculate load requirements and match all systems accurately, and test them to ensure they deliver good air quality. But our team has an HVAC professional who can advise clients on how to troubleshoot problems associated with the air conditioning system or air conditioner. If a client insists on us taking extra work that is not our core business, I have to subcontract the extra work to a trusted HVAC technician who can help with indoor comfort.

Farm life is enjoyable, busy, and rewarding.

For that reason, we always monitor our humidity levels at all times, especially in the house. The rule of thumb for us is between 40% to 60%. Anything above or below that, we risk losing our harvests and tackling mold. When we started farming to survive, we were quite naive and had a steep learning curve for most things, such as an air conditioning system for the farmhouse. Having gotten help with indoor comfort, we can now rest easy knowing the bug problems would be a thing of the past with temperature and humidity well managed.

Mold built up and destroyed her valuables, but the insurance company wasn’t buying her ignorance.

Did you know you can lose your home insurance claim in some states and cities if your ac service is invalid or not properly serviced? Well, my neighbor learned that the hard way, prompting me to investigate further how those two are connected. Where we stay, humidity is our biggest enemy, and most homesteads fight to keep up with the demands of maintaining a healthy temperature balance. Besides allergies and window fogs, uncontrolled humidity is known to cause structural issues in extreme cases. My neighbor ignored all the bad signs that came with humidity in her basement, and she pointed the finger at her malfunctioning air conditioning system. Although she insured her house against bad weather and other disasters or theft, she forgot to maintain her air conditioner. Knowing her, her mantra is “whatever isn’t broken doesn’t need fixing.” But she thought she could get away with an insurance claim without having proper HVAC maintenance and performing some ac repairs to her damaged systems that compromised her air quality in the basement. Mold built up and destroyed her valuables, but the insurance company wasn’t buying her ignorance. They even checked with her HVAC company and discord that she had not renewed her home services for months. The HVAC technician who serviced her property last produced a report indicating she was supposed to seek further help with indoor comfort besides cleaning her ac filter. Realizing that she had lost her claim, she started afresh with a new HVAC professional who was grateful she didn’t have ductwork to deal with or air ducts to clean. Otherwise, her HVAC unit would have been dead ages ago.

Today I did an unusual thing.

I was at the CBD waiting for a friend to come for a coffee date.

Since I didn’t want to start ahead, I decided to kill time window shopping at a nearby street. Ours is a small city, so there isn’t much to do or see, but I bumped into a repair shop I had never recognized despite using the street often. I guess it’s difficult to spot certain things when your mind isn’t concentrating on the same. When I walked into the store, to make it worthwhile, I presented a scenario where I had an issue with my air quality, and so I needed help with indoor comfort. Since I was barely prepared for the questions the HVAC technician asked, I fumbled a lot as I responded. First, I didn’t know whether I had an air conditioner or an HVAC unit. In all honesty, I didn’t realize they were two different things. But his next question about air ducts clarified it, and I recognized the system I had. He was quite knowledgeable about the parts of an air conditioning system and the steps to take when performing basic ac repair or providing HVAC maintenance. I couldn’t quite figure out any typical problem a ductwork might pose, except for clogged ac filters that I had witnessed being cleaned. But the fact that I signed up for regular home services from a reputable HVAC company assured him that my system was well managed by the HVAC professional that services it. And with that, I walked out of the repair shop just as my date called to inform me she had arrived. I must admit, it was an informative session.
