I don’t know how it got there, or even if it was there when we moved in. All I know is that when the HVAC technician arrived to work on the air conditioning unit, we were both horrified at what he found. We were so scared that both of us laughed until we were holding our sides. He said he had never seen the carcass of a dead rat before, and finding one inside the air conditioning unit was so horrible that he screamed. He apologized and said he had never screamed like that before. I had never screamed like that before, either. Neither of us expected to see a dead rat, in or around the air conditioning unit, but he had to find out where it came from. I worried that some of the noise we heard in the ductwork was rats running inside it. I couldn’t figure out how the rats could get in there. The HVAC technician told me it took a quarter sized hole for a rat to get in. He was going to look at the ductwork and see if there were any holes in the ductwork.He shook his head and said the rat wasn’t in the ductwork. Somehow, it had gotten into the air conditioning unit itself. He didn’t think the fins were large enough for it to squeeze inside, but stranger things had happened. He got rid of the remains and serviced the air conditioning unit. He said if we heard any more noises, we should call him and he would come out and do a complete inspection of the system.

As a first time homeowner, I have to learn a new skill every week.

I do not miss living in a tiny, cramped apartment surrounded by neighbors cooking foul-smelling food.

What I do miss is having a landlord with a maintenance team that handled all the little problems with the place. If there was a power outage or a running toilet, I just called the front office. Those days are long gone, because now there is no landlord, so any problems that emerge I need to handle myself, or by hiring a professional. When my hot water heater broke down, I immediately turned to my most trusted resource – Youtube. I knew that calling a heater repair company would cost money just to get an inspection and an estimate. I could not afford that at the time, so I needed to suss out the problem with the water heater, and then determine if it was something I could fix. I spent a couple of hours watching basic tutorial videos online, so I could figure out what make and model of water heater I had. Then I got more specific, and watched videos about how to troubleshoot the most common problems associated with my brand of water heater. All of the videos I watched were sponsored by various water heater companies that showed ads about their newest models. I guess I got brainwashed, because after a while I stopped wanting to fix the old water heater, and thought about just buying a new one. I think a new tankless water heater would be nice to have.

Do you know the difference between the seasons of Summer, Fall, and Spring in the Deep South region of the country? It’s a joke, because there is no difference between those three seasons! During the coldest days of winter I might experience a few weeks of chilly weather, but nothing that a hoodie and a hat can’t handle. I have lived in the south my whole life, until a few weeks ago when I moved into the far north to be with my long-distance girlfriend. I am still in the middle of my transition, and getting used to the fact that I need to use a heater almost every day. In my old house I could go for months on end without ever using the heating system once. Up here in the great white north the house doesn’t even have an air conditioner, because it is so rarely needed. Not only is there a huge central heating system in the place, but there are also two back-up systems in place. In the basement there is an antique furnace that hasn’t been used in over a decade. Allegedly it’s still functional, but this furnace is so old and dusty I don’t even want to touch it. Also I have a brick fireplace in the front room of the home. I love the idea of a brick fireplace, but it does seem like a lot of work when I could just click the thermostat instead. The fact that I have three different heating systems, and there is no air conditioning at all, still seems crazy to me!

When I first moved into this neighborhood, Dean seemed like a nice guy.

At first I thought this was cool, but over time I realized that Dean was just nosy. He was always trying to “help” his neighbors, mostly so he could ask questions and look in their houses. It only took a few weeks before I was through with this jerk, and I started to give him the cold shoulder. Everything came to a head last week, in spectacular fashion, on the day my new HVAC system was being installed. First of all, this HVAC system was not anything fancy or exotic, but it was one of the newest “smart” models on the market. This is equipment designed and built by an eco-friendly HVAC company that is intended for longevity and efficiency. This should be the last HVAC system I ever have to buy, because the lifespan is 20 to 30 years! When Dean started nosing around and bothering the HVAC techs while they were in the yard, I lost my temper. I kicked him off my property and told him to leave the workers alone, which only made him more curious about the HVAC system. I saw him looking over the fence, trying to get a glimpse of the writing on the side of the air handler component of the new HVAC system. At this point I was just messing with him, because keeping him in the dark about the HVAC equipment was funny to me.
