It had been such a busy week at work as we were running audits for the year.

The bosses wanted the exercise to be complete by the holiday weekend.

We pushed ourselves to finish the project that Thursday before the long holiday weekend began. I remember feeling relieved when we wrapped up. All I wanted to do was to go home, cook myself a lovely meal the rest of the night. I did just that but when I woke the following morning, my air conditioner was not working. I tried fumbling with the controls on the unit to get it started but nothing worked. After about two hours of messing with the button and the thermostat, I recalled having an a/c care plan given to me by the a/c representative from the local air conditioning company that had done my air conditioner installation. The only thing I could do as part of the a/c care was to change the filters, the rest had to be done by a professional a/c worker. I had only one filter left and I managed to install it successfully. I made a note to visit the air conditioning supplier the following week for more filters. Replacing the filters did not work, the house was still boiling and the air quality was not amusing. I had planned to have the annual air conditioning maintenance and a/c repairs done the following week. After pursuing through the plan and the internet for solutions, I settled for my standing fan as my new air conditioning system for the weekend. While trying to solve my issue, I read up on the proper a/c service and reserved questions and clarifications to the experts from the air conditioning business that I was expecting that Monday.

Summer is finally with us.

To me, this is the most celebrated and awaited season of the year. I always look forward to summer. However, with all air conditioners off for a couple of months during winter, what is the best way to ensure that the equipment is ready to run through summer without breaking down? My a/c unit had been off for about five months and before summer started, I wanted to ensure that the equipment still functioned fine. From the a/c care plan given to me by the a/c representative that did my air conditioner installation, I needed to schedule an air conditioning maintenance session with an a/c worker so they can examine the system and do any necessary a/c repairs if any. I called the air conditioning business and scheduled a technician to do the tune-up. The tune-up took about three hours and I was hoping I did not need to spend too much money at the air conditioning supplier store because of multiple part replacements. However, there was good news, I only needed to replace the filters and clean up the entire unit. Replacing the filters significantly increased the air quality and restored the optimal function of the unit, just as it was when it was a new air conditioning system. After running the required a/c service, now I had to assign a cleaning crew to clean my entire home and have a clean slate as at the start of summer. The air conditioning company also explained a few things I could do on my own without the help of a technician as part of the a/c care program.

It had been quite a challenging school year. When we started the year, it was interrupted by the global pandemic, Covid-19. We had to stop school, or rather take it home due to the measures taken by the ministry of health. At first, I missed my friends so much, but I sort of got used to it and I put in more hours for school as I wanted to take advantage of studying from the comfort of my room and pass with flying colors. After a few months when the experts were able to come up with a vaccine, we were allowed to go back to school. We will be sitting for our exams in about a week. Since the air conditioner had not been used for a while, it affected the air quality because I assume the filters were dirty. The a/c workers from the local air conditioning company were called for a/c repairs. The a/c representatives mentioned that to do any repairs, they would have to run comprehensive air conditioning maintenance. The a/c service revealed a series of issues ranging from worn-out components to dirty filters and even damaged parts. The air conditioner installation had happened about five years back so the system was still considered a fairly new air conditioning system. The school management was happy that they did not need to order a new unit from the air conditioning business however they had a lot to learn to avoid a repeat of the same. In the twelve months of working in a new air conditioning company, the time had come for me to showcase the skills that I had acquired as well as the confidence I would have in executing the tasks given.

The customer assured us that he had scheduled the first air conditioning maintenance session with a different technician. When I examined the system in the course of running the a/c repair, I noticed that the components were covered in dust and dirt. I replaced the filters and illustrated the process to the customer so he could change them in the future as part of a/c care. The steps were also outlined on the a/c care plan that the customer could refer to. After I was done with the a/c service, the unit was like a new air conditioning system. I parked up my gear and we left the customer fully satisfied. I got a full score and passed that session.

I don’t think I really ever had the appreciation for my home that I should have had.

It’s not that I didn’t like where we lived or wish it was vastly different.

No, I think it was more that I just didn’t think all that much about the house at all. And that’s a sort of disconnect that reflects where my head was at for a very long time. For me, I came home to quality heating and air, saw the kids, ate dinner and went to bed. The next day, it was the same all over again. I was sort of an automaton really. It’s not that I didn’t like my life because I did. But I just wasn’t at all engaged with it. That all changed over the past couple of years. Unfortunately, it took something like a pandemic for me to realize that life is for living. The offices with the zone controlled HVAC were shut down and I had to work from home. That was a transition that was not all that pleasant for anyone. My kids were trying to learn remotely from our home while my wife was also trying to working remotely in the air conditioning as well. But the more we tried, the more things became quite pleasant. I started to really live more in the moment due to being at home all that time. And that made me want to make our surroundings that much more comfortable and healthy. To that end, I improved our indoor air quality by upgrading to the HEPA filter instead of the cheap HVAC air filters I’d used for ages.
